THE De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Management and Information Technology (SMIT) has integrated the Academic Hadoop cluster using the Amazon EMR (Elastic MapReduce) in its classes.
The initiative was made possible through the grant of the global professional services company Accenture and technology consulting firm Apper Digital Inc., making Benilde the first educational institution in the Philippines to use the cloud-based big data platform Amazon EMR.
Amazon EMR makes it easier to run big data frameworks on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for processing and analyzing enormous volumes of data for business intelligence and analytics tasks. It can also transform and move large amounts of data into and out of other AWS data stores and databases.
Solely implemented in the fundamentals of the Big Data course, the platform is currently exclusively offered to the CSB students of the Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) and Computer Applications (CA) programs under the SMIT-Analytics, Computing and Infotech (SMIT-ACI) Cluster.
The software assists educators as well as learners in easily accessing and expanding their knowledge of complex and vast datasets, whether in online or face-to-face lessons.

It facilitates the processing and analysis of substantial files using the Hadoop ecosystem — an open-source framework designed to store and handle extensive records in educational and research endeavors.
The EMR likewise streamlines the procedures for establishing, configuring and overseeing Hadoop functions. It provides a managed structure, encompassing the essential parts of Hadoop, such as the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and other significant Big Data open-source software tools such as Hive, Hue, HBase, Pig and Spark.
The system also enables users to choose the specific components they want to include in their EMR composition.
Benilde Hub of Innovation for Inclusion (HiFi) director and CA lecturer Paul Amerigo Pajo Jr. 2nd shared that the college has created a cutting-edge curriculum by providing up-to-date tools.
“We want to give the learners state-of-the-art systems like AWS’s EMR to strengthen their understanding of the progressive digital age. AWS’s EMR also heightens the expertise and proficiency of the young innovators to become the next generation of leaders,” he continued.
Benilde BIA mentor Romualdo Bautista Jr. concurred that the availability of the top-tier and premier instruments in the college allows the students to familiarize themselves with the industry standards.
“The best way to teach modern technology is by having modern technology,” he said.
