Maryland state government will soon get a software update.Gov. Wes Moore on Monday signed an executive order focused keeping up to date with evolving technology and integrating it into state government in a safe and ethical way.Moore and state Information Technology Secretary Katie Olson Savage announced four new technology initiatives focused on artificial intelligence, a new digital services team, a digital accessibility policy and a cybersecurity partnership with the Maryland Army National Guard.The executive order would address responsible and productive use of artificial intelligence by state agencies. The executive order also establishes an AI subcabinet to develop and implement a comprehensive AI action plan. The new digital services team would support state agency needs with website and app redesigns, among other priorities.The digital accessibility policy would ensure equal access to state-procured and developed IT and services for all Marylanders, regardless of ability.The state is working to recruit more cybersecurity experts through state military departments and looking to improve the user experience on state websites.”It is not lost on me that for many people in our state, the words ‘AI’ and ‘cyber’ can make some people scared. Here’s the thing: This technology is already here. The only question is whether we are going to be reactive or proactive in this moment. Our administration will always choose to lead,” Moore said.Moore said the executive order follows through with a campaign promise to give the state the tools it needs to thrive in the next decade. The governor said he looks forward to working with the Maryland General Assembly to create legislation centered around artificial intelligence.
